NINE SILENCES (deluxe, pre-publication)

In this series of poems, Doireann Ní Ghríofa responds to art by Alice Maher. Nine Silences is a consideration of the embodiment of female silence, mermaids, and the monstrousness of the feminine, deepening into an exploration of the otherness of female desire and domesticity. Design and letterpress printing by Jamie Murphy at Distillers Press, NCAD. The type will be hand-typeset in 14 and 24 point Méridien, designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954, this release from Deberny & Peignot in 1957. Alice Maher’s fragmented woodcut will be printed from the original blocks. The 150gsm Hodgkinson handmade paper was produced for the Stanbrook Abbey Press in the early 1970s and kept dry and safe until now by John Purcell in London. Based on the theme of the sea, the marbled paper will be prepared by Jemma Lewis using Irish Carrigeen Moss. The bindings will be executed by Tom Duffy and family in Dublin’s Five Lamps area. The book will be printed in an edition of 80 copies. Copies marked 1 – 50 will be bound in marbled paper over boards, housed in a transparent perspex slipcase. Four similar copies marked i – iv will be for collaborators.
